EP33: Watch Out Lil’ Elf

2015-11-30

Good People, we’re back with the the Post-Thanksgiving run down. We spend some time reflecting fondly over our Thanksgiving activities and thinking about what’s to come for the rest of the holiday season.

We’ve been a little distracted this week, so there’s not much Ellen to report. But, she started the 12 Days of Christmas giving a little early, which is awesome for those who are so fortunate to be in the audience already. In general though, we’re just thankful for Ellen. *swoons*

This week’s Would You Rather question looks at what type of neighbor you would rather have, a nosy one or a noisy one?  Which naturally leads to some stories about communal living and some less-than-desirable neighbors. We want to hear your neighbor stories and, of course, what type of neighbor you’d rather have. We’re listening…@FSGPodcast  #FSGWYR

Around the water cooler, we talk about Snoop Lion & the Turkeys, CoCo and Ice T’s “young” family, the video of the murder of Jaquan Mcdonald by a Chicago Police Officer, and last night’s Soul Train Awards. We don’t have an official “Let’s Talk About It” this week, but Shells shares  a concern about The Elf on the Shelf and marvels at Irene’s “signature” performance head snap.

And speaking of Irene’s head snap, in her Beats this week is the perfect song for her most recent performance. Then, we wrap up the show with a little quote in the spirit of peace.

That’s it for now. We’ll see you next week!

EP32: The Plight of Patti’s Pies

2015-11-23

Hey ya’ll! Shells has been busy trying to get on the Steve Harvey show, unsuccessfully and Irene has been chillin’ for the most part.  Neither of us can believe that it’s already time for Thanksgiving…but it is.

This week in Ellen Awesomeness, Portia stopped by to help clarify which one is “the short one” in their relationship, and Diane Keaton’s visit made it evident that she is a bonafide trip. But our favorite moment this week was going down memory lane with Jeannie…and then Ellen’s kindness strikes again!

Hit us up on TwitterFacebook, or Instagram and let us know if you would rather be able to hear every conversation around you or be able to take back things that you say.

Around the water cooler, we talk about the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris, the chaos and confusion surrounding Syria and their refugees, the less than shocking news of Charlie Sheen‘s HIV announcement, a glaring omission on Billboards Best Rappers list, and the trouble in the saying “Everything Happens for a Reason“.

And like many, we had to spend some time talking about the mind blowing phenomenon that was James Wright Chanel‘s YouTube video on Patti LaBelle’s sweet potato pie. (We tried to get James on the show… but apparently, he’s a little busy given recent events….BUT, we’d still love to have you on James!) The volume of sales, the social media hype, a little psychology of sales, and the underlying example of the power of the black dollar…we talk about it all.

Wrapping up- In Irene’s Beats this week, is a hit from an artist that SHOULD have been on Billboard’s list of to top rappers. And Jeannie’s story (from unemployed to Ellen) is this week’s beautiful story to inspire all of us.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, ya’ll. We are thankful for each of you…and each other *insert kissey face*

EP31: The Blackish Empire

2015-11-16

Yellow Hello! (bwhahaha, Irene hates that greeting). Here we are again…

While Irene is gearing up for Black Friday shopping, Shells is trying not to ruin her sweet spirited son.

Speaking of sweet spirits, it was a good week on The Ellen show. She celebrated her 2000th episode and had, Jennifer Aniston, Justin Timberlake, and Kerry Washington on as guests during her milestone episode. Good stuff as always, and we’re so happy for Ellen’s accomplishment. 2000 times she’s reminded us to be kind…and we’re listening! 🙂 We also talk about the Beiber/DeGeneres relationship and Shonda Rhimes’, rare, interview.

This week’s would you rather question is about what you’d rather have unlimited access to: Clothes or Food.  Bet you can’t guess which host chooses what. -_- As always, we want to hear from you. Hit us up on Twitter/IG/Facebook (@FSGPodcast) and #FSGWYR

Around the water cooler this week, we get into the racial tension at Mizzou and the HBCU vs PWI conversation, the GOP debate (kinda, not really), Irene’s commitment to Love and HipHop and RHOA, Missy Elliott’s new music video, a $70K minimum wage, and Rihanna’s growing empire. Then we talk about two of the biggest primetime shows featuring predominately black actors: Empire & Blackish.

In Irene’s Beats this week is an up and coming hiphop and R&B sensation with stellar writing credits. And Shonda’s 2014 Dartmouth Commencement Speech provides this week’s eye spy inspiration.

That’s all for now! We love ya’ll and we deeply appreciate all of the love and support!

Listen…Laugh…Share, and we’ll see you next week!

EP30: The Whole Conversation

2015-11-09

What up, good people! We’re back like we neva left… and as the holiday season approaches, it’s stirring up a long forgotten obsession (or sorts) for Shells. And since we’re talking about obsessions: Irene has a thing for Target.

It was a fun week on Ellen. Will Smith came by the show and talked about parenthood, his new movie “Concussion“, and an upcoming (and overdue) tour with DJ Jazzy Jeff. In the spirit of music, Ellen premiered the Bernie Sanders version of Hotline Bling, which has gone viral! If you haven’t gotten into adult coloring books, here’s your chance! It would make a great Christmas gift if you can’t score tickets to 12 Days.

Around the water cooler, we talk about the unraveling “murder” case of the Fox Lake, IL officer, and there’s a few National Day of to celebrate: Vanilla Cupcakes Day (Nov 10th), Veterans Day (Nov 11th), and Chicken Soup for the Soul Day (Nov 12th).

And Irene shares a personal story of White Nonsense that highlights entitlement, respect, and accountability. And in a similar vein, we discuss the danger of linear, one-sided, ego based conversations about our societal and cultural issues.

We wrap this week’s show up with (another) Canadian artist making waves and Shells’ eye spy is a little nugget about power and character.

That’s all folks…until next week. We love ya’ll and continue to Listen.Laugh.Share.

EP29: The People’s Choice

2015-11-06

It feels gooooooddddd to be back!! We apologize for the unexpected lapse…but, you know, LIFE. So, now…on with the show!

The million dollar questions this week are: “did Cole ever get his bday party”? And “Is Irene changing professions?” We’ll find out and then we’ll talk about our Halloween!

Ellen’s Master Class aired on OWN and we enjoyed it as much as we thought we would! Heidi Klum also stopped by the show to discuss Project Runway, lice infestation, and customes! Then, Ellen introduced us to the newest Kardashian, discussed urban dictionary, and talks ED on Air.

This week we address self sustaining actions …food or clothes… in this week’s would you rather. What’s your preference? Talk back on social media (Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram): @fsgpodcast, #FSGWYR.

We’ll call this week’s water cooler news, InCaseYouMissedIt: Just few nuggets: Biden’s not running, Royals take the World Series, and then we talk about #Zola.

Then we talk about the highly provocative episode of Being Mary Jane. There were so much buzz about this particular episode, that we just had to talk about all they issues covered: depression, suicide, broken friendship, molestation. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, please seek professional help. If you are feeling suicidal, call 1-800-273-8255 (National Suicide Prevention Hotline).

We wrap it up with a little throwback music in Irene’s Beats, and Ellen & Zola inspired Shells motivational moment! (lol)

So there it is, folks! We’re glad to be back and we’ll see you again soon!

EP28: FAMU HC15 Recap

2015-10-26

Well, we survived FAMU’s 2015 Homecoming and we’re back to tell you all about it …. and other things, of course!

In the world of Ellen, we are excited about Oprah on Ellen and then Ellen on OWN: Ellen’s Master Class. We’re really looking forward to hearing her share some of the teachable moments that shaped her! We also discuss a blog post that is clearly a misuse of our girl’s name for clicks…and Irene is mad.

In a knod to Shells’ son, this week’s Would You Rather question is about which superhero, Batman or SpiderMan, you’d rather be? #FSGWYR @fsgpodcast

This week, we are renaming “Water Cooler News” to “A Week in the Pop Culture Mind of Irene”. There’s Out in Hip Hop, the TIDAL concert, Meek Mill, Hotline Bling, Back 2 the Future, and Undisclosed. And in true Shelley randomness, there’s a little addition about cheese addiction.

Then we get into the recap of FAMU’s Homecoming. There was so much goodness over the weekend and it was amazing for both of us to return to The Hill. One of the best moments was Convocation, which included the inspiring  speech by Angela Robinson (aka: Veronica Harrington from Tyler Perry’s Haves & The Have Nots), and the band that always gets you back into that FAMU spirit- The 100!

What’s in Irene’s Beats this week is a direct extension of the FAMU experience, and an Angela Robinson quote is our Eye Spy Inspiration this week. It was an exciting week… and we sound like it! lol.

Hope you enjoy the show…and remember to Listen – Laugh – and Share!

We’ll be back next week.

EP27: Ask Me Something

2015-10-19

HEY, Good People! This is the last week you hear us talk about getting ready for FAMU homecoming and you can sum up our final preparation efforts as “Superwoman Wednesday“. And the anticipation is bringing up some deep emotions…for Irene. Meanwhile, Shells has a really full kid-free social agenda for the first time in a while…and it’s exciting and terrifying all at the same time!

We’ve been pretty busy so we’re not caught up with Ellen, but there’s always a good “You’re Welcome Wednesdays” to share, which led to an enlightening convo about teeth whitening.  And then we talk about how cool Twitch is, which led to Irene coming for his job.

This week, we’re keeping it light… so we talk about the food… warm food or cold food, that is. What would you rather? @FSGPodcast #FSGWYR

Water Cooler News includes the increasing pushback on Columbus Day and the role social media played on it, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are expecting and National Pregnancy & Infant Loss Day, the sad Lamar Odom story, and our recap on the Democratic Debate.

And in the spirit of keeping it light, we decided to play an very abbreviated version of “20 Questions”. We’re still learning things about each other and ya’ll are welcome to let us know how’d you answer these questions too!

Our theme song for the upcoming weekend is in Irene’s Beats this week and the Eye Spy Inspiration is simply divine.

That’s all for now! We can’t wait to see you next week for a full FAMU HC15 recap…see you then!

Listen. Laugh. Share.

EP26: Guilty Pleasures

2015-10-13

With FAMU’s homecoming just a week away, Irene is (almost) done with planning our campus reunion, celebration, and the expectation of a large group of women. Shells is reflective about the illusive “alone time” in motherhood and Shells household is rooting for the Cubs … hard. Then, that story about the baseball game sorority girls…the one we almost cut from the show last week… caught the attention of  alot of our favorite people. But, you heard it here first!

And speaking of favorite people, Ellen had an adorable 8 year old fitness trainer on the show, who also challenged Usain Bolt to a foot race. It was an awesome interview with both. But what’s got us really excited is Ellen’s open call to join her squad! We’re working on a video to submit to EllenTube now! #EllenSquad here we come!!

This week, we get in a lively debate about being either a winner or a spectator. We love to hear your answers to our would you rather questions. We’re waiting to hear from you Twitter or Facebook (@FSGPodcast) and use the hashtag #FSGWYR!

Here’s something to chop it up about around the water-cooler this week: Spencer Stone gets stabbed again (he’s the dude that helped thwart the shooting on the train in France over the summer), there’s some shady business with some of the increasingly popular fantasy football sites, ABC Family is changing it’s name and we don’t understand, an Ohio stoner called the police on himself and his munchies, and there’s a few things to celebrate next week.

Then we get into a little sharing about some of guilty pleasures. You know, those things that you really enjoy…but you don’t really want anyone to know about? Since we LOVE y’all soon much, why not share (just a few) of ours with the good people? LOL!!!  Nothing too crazy, but this topic definitely led to some classic FSG giggles! What are some of your guilty pleasures?

And in the spirit of guilty pleasures, Irene’s got another one in her Beats this week. And Shells sends you off with some inspiration about following through on fleeting thoughts and trusting your gut.

That’s all for this week…but we’ll be back, as always. Until then, listen, laugh, share!

EP25: Cuffin’ Season’s Upon Us

2015-10-05

What up, fam! It’s been a rainy few days for Irene, who’s prepping for a  weekend in NYC & FAMU’s homecoming. And Shells’ son is her biggest teacher this week – the young man is paying attention to details and asking some hard questions.
In the wonderful world of Ellen, this week’s guests included Tracee Ellis Ross, and Kim Kardashian West & young North. Then, there’s the new segment “When Life Gives You Lemons” that we over-love! Ellen’s fashion line is available … at Bergdorf Goodman<— hyperlinked for your (and Irene’s) convenience, lol.
This week’s Would You Rather weighs happiness and knowledge. Let us know what you’d rather on Facebook and Twitter. @FSGPodcast #FSGWYR
Around the water-cooler, we’ve narrowly escaped another government shutdown; there’s the NCAA hustle; Trump is worse than Putin (Go figure.), President Obama addresses gun control…again, and apparently, there’s no place for selfies in baseball. So, there’s that.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, the cuffs come out! This week, we talk about Cuffin’ Season, which makes for an interesting conversation since Irene’s single and ouchea…and Shells is married and not.
Irene’s Beats are playing what could serve as this “season’s” anthem of sorts. (We should also mention that someone is falling under the Tidal spell…IJS). And Shells is still learning from Taraji’s example of support and encouragement, and sharing the insight in this weeks Eye Spy.
That’s a wrap…for now! Until next week, Listen. Laugh. Share!

EP24: A Week of Black Queens & the Pope

2015-09-28

The week was pretty low key for both of us. Shells’ youngest is really coming into her personality — and she’s going to be a handful. Meanwhile, Irene is happy that she gave into Tidal and Apple Music and it’s taking over her life…in a good way, of course. Not to mention…what a time it is to be alive, thanks to Drake & Future…and all of the amazing fall television that premiered this week.

Ellen helped kick off the week of Black Queens with an amazing line up of guests this week, including Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae, and Viola Davis. Not only was it a treat to watch the great conversation that our bestie (in our heads), Ellen had with all these amazing women, we LOVE to see Ellen and her wife, Portia DeRossi, together and this week the two shared the talkshow stage…and it was super cute and endearingly funny!

This week we ask, would you rather never touch another human again or never touch a computer powered device again…. ever. This one turned out to be a littler harder than we expected… and we want to hear from you… We’re on Twitter and Facebook @FSGPodcast #FSGWYR

Then we get into this week’s water cooler news, which just so happened to be chock-full on Black Queens…and The Pope. Viola Davis’ Emmy win and her acceptance speech was triumphant, honest, and inclusive. Taraji demonstrated what supporting your sisters looks likes…literally. Then Apple premiered a commercial adorned with Black Queens. It’s one of the best commercials we’ve ever seen because it speaks loudly to fun, friendship and the experience of music. And speaking of musical experiences … Beyonce slayed, yet again, at the Global Citizen Festival in NYC and then had the esteemed honor of introducing The First Lady, Michelle Obama, who spoke about the new a campaign #62MillionGirls. And if a week of Black Queens wasn’t enough, there was also the fact that the division of church and state was at an all time low, with the pervasive presence of His Holiness – The Pope.

A young Canadian songbird is in Irene’s beat’s this week and a Rhonda Rousey quote (that caught Beyonce’s attention) inspired Shells’ Eye Spy.

Remember to listen. laugh. share! We love ya’ll! Until next week, good people!
